• The door slowly creaks open, revealing the mere outline of a shadowy figure...

"Hello there....." The man steps inside and lets the door swing closed behind him, then brushes off his arms, droplets of water falling to soak the dusty, wooden floor. Crossing the room, he refrains from lowering his hood, preferring to keep his face hidden in the dim tavern light. Taking a seat at the bar, he turns to see you sitting there. "Greetings! Do lend an ear, stranger! I have stories the likes of you would never imagine!" he says, his voice like silk that would entice even the most stubborn of attentions. From beneath his robes, he produces a large tome and lays it on the bar, turning to the first page. You find yourself enthralled by the man, your fear of his appearance overcome with curiosity. Just what secrets did he hold, and what secrets will he divulge? The fireplace crackles  behind you as you pull up a chair to listen...

Dragonkin - Chapter 7: Dragonrider

They were able to make her afternoon classes that day. After an argument where Ryu told her to stay home and recover from hypothermia, she had insisted on going back to school that afternoon, and seemed disappointed to have missed her one morning class. So, since she was still sick, Ryu had insisted on tagging along, and after another argument they both jumped in her car and sped off to school. They made it just in time to attend Mythological Studies, and as they took their seats in the back, they both froze when they spotted Michelle standing next to the teacher in the front of the class.
“Good afternoon, class!” the teacher began, “We have Dr. Higgins back with us today to continue our discussion about dragons.”
“Please, call me Michelle.” She said, flattered, “But really, there’s not much left to say after the last class.”
“That’s not really the reason I called you back here, Michelle.” The teacher said, “I wanted to give the students a chance to ask you questions about your research and to hear your opinions.”
“Oh,” she laughed nervously, “I see.”
“Michelle?” A student asked, raising his hand, “You said you found a real dragon. What did it look like?” She shot a nervous look up at Ryu’s hooded head.
“It looked like it did in my pictures.” She said.
“Those weren’t very clear.” He said, “You said it broke out of the ice and flew away. What was its size? It’s wingspan? Did it have horns?”
“Um, well?” she stammered nervously, “I didn’t get a good look at it to tell you the truth.”
“Michelle? What happened to that enthusiasm from last time?” the teacher asked, “It’s like your fire died out!” Again another nervous glance at Ryu. Rosette sneezed and a few students looked back at them for a moment, but again returned their attention to Michelle.
“Michelle, what do you think about dragons, in your opinion?” a girl asked, “Do you believe that they did exist? Do you think they were monsters as they are depicted in some folklore?”
“I guess I proved that they did exist, but I don’t agree with the monster theory.” She said, “Not anymore.” Her voice trailed off and her last words couldn’t be heard by the students.
            “Can you elaborate?”
“Well I agree with what Ryu was saying last time.” She said, “Maybe they were intelligent as he had said. Maybe the view we have of them had been jaded by our own dark past.”
“That kid in the back?” a girl asked, turning around, and then leaned over to her friend, “I think he’s kind of creepy. What’s with the cloak?”
“I know. I wonder what he’s hiding?” she said.
“He looks to be a sixteen year old, but he talks as if he’s an adult.” The girl said, “It is definitely strange.”
“Just think about it, class.” Michelle continued, “What if dragons were intelligent? What if they could talk? What if they had their views about us like we have of them? What if our ancestors wouldn’t listen to them and just began killing them?”
“I would say the dragons would fight back.” Another student said.
“Now if you look throughout folklore and old stories, do dragons fly around and kill humans indiscriminately?” she asked.
            “Not really.”
“They usually stick in caves or something.” Another student said, “That’s where the knights would go to slay them.”
“Exactly. They would leave humans alone if not provoked. This is what I believe.” She said.
“But I thought that dragons would eat humans.” Another girl said, “Didn’t some kill whole settlements to feed?”
“You may have heard something like that from a biased storyteller. The view of dragons that eat humans may be well known, but it’s not popular among most folklore.” Michelle said, “You should look at the general overview of them, and not let one story affect your opinion.”
“So what’s with the sudden change of heart, Michelle?” the teacher asked, “Last time you were almost calling the dragon a killer, and now you’re defending it?”
            “What?”
“The dragon you said you had found.” She said, “You’re opinion of it seems to have changed. Did something happen?” The class leaned in and Ryu shifted uncomfortably in his seat.
“Not really.” She nervously said, glancing up at Ryu, “I was just thinking about it, that’s all. It makes more sense to think of dragons as intelligent beings. Some cultures even regard the dragon as a divine symbol of life.”
            “I don’t know….” The teacher said suspiciously, “I think you’re hiding something.”

“You’ve never tried coffee?” Rosette asked as they stood in front of the lobby’s coffee stand, “You don’t know what you’re missing!”
“They probably didn’t invent coffee until after I was frozen, Rosette. I’ve tried tea before, but other than that I’ve only drank water.” He said, getting stares from a few girls he recognized from class. He had noticed them watching both he and Rosette as they exited the class, but hoped they would get bored and go away. When they had followed them to the coffee stand, he had thought it was a coincidence, but when they began trailing behind again afterwards as they continued down the hall, he knew they were definitely following him.
They had left the building and began walking through the middle of the campus to the next building, but since they had an hour to Rosette’s next class, they took a seat on a clean bench to drink their coffee. Ryu noticed the girls watching from around the corner, but didn’t say anything as he took the first sip of his coffee. Actually, it wasn’t really a sip, but rather a large gulp of the boiling liquid. Rosette stared with wide eyes.
“What are you doing?!” she exclaimed, “You don’t drink it like that! You’ll burn your throat!” Ryu lowered the cup and gave her an obvious look.
“Rosette, I’m a fire dragon, remember? I’m fireproof.” He quietly said, but closed his mouth when the girls finally came over.
“Can we help you?” Rosette asked. The girls nervously gathered around one who stepped forward with confidence.
“We were just wondering about your friend, Rosette.” She said, “Who is he?”
“My name is Ryu.” He said, “If you have a question, then direct it to me.”
“Fine then,” she said in a snotty tone, “Why are you hiding under that shabby cloak all the time? What are you hiding?”
“Nothing at all.” He said, taking another large gulp of coffee. He leaned over to speak to Rosette, “This stuff is pretty good.”
“Where are you from?” she asked, “I know you’re a foreigner.”
            “Does it matter?” he asked.
            “Just curious.” She said.
“Why are you so interested in me?”
“Because you’re hiding something.” She said, “Secrets are just begging to be discovered.”
“A little nosy, are we? Ever hear of a little thing called privacy?” Ryu said, giving her a glare from under his hood.
“Hey, I’m just curious. I’m sure we all are.” She said, “It’s just that you seem very different than all of us, and we would like to know you better.” Her voice took on a more friendly voice, but Rosette didn’t seem convinced.
“What do you want?” Rosette asked.
“How old are you, Ryu?” she asked.
            “Why?”
“Because I was going to invite you two out to the bar so we can have some fun. We could chat and become friends. I just wanted to know if you were old enough.” She said.
“How old do you have to be?” he asked.
“You are a foreigner, aren’t you?” she said, “You have to be at least nineteen.”
“Then I can go.” He said.
“Great, then how about tonight? There’s a bar on campus that we can go to.” She said, “Meet there at nine?”
“I don’t know.” Rosette said, glancing at Ryu. He didn’t move.
“Who’s inviting anyway?” Ryu asked, “You haven’t said your name.”
“It’s Rebecca Tanger.” She said, “What’s your last name?”
“I don’t have one.” He said, standing up and brushing snow off his cloak. He tossed his now empty coffee cup into a trash can a few feet away and got it in without even looking.
“You don’t have a last name?” Rebecca asked, “Is that even possible these days? What about your driver’s license?”
            “I can’t drive.” He said.
            “How do you get around?”
“Rosette usually drives.” He said, “Otherwise, I walk, run, or fly.” The group of girls went silent as Rosette began to panic.
“Y-You mean you’re…”Rebecca gasped, pointing a finger. Rosette waited for the wild accusation, but her apprehension was premature.
            “What?” Ryu asked.
“Are you a pilot?” she asked. Rosette let out a sigh of relief.
            “A what?”
“You said you can fly, right? That means you are a pilot, right?” she asked, getting excited.
“Rosette, what’s a pilot?” he asked.
“It’s a person who can fly a plane.” She said, “A flying machine, like my car is a machine. It’s used for transportation.”
“You mean like a flying car?”
“Sort of, but bigger and shaped differently. But it’s used for the same thing.” She said.
“So are you a pilot?” she asked again.
“Um, no.” he said, confused, “Forget I said that.” Rebecca seemed to be getting frustrated.
“See! That’s what I mean about hiding something!” she exclaimed, “Can you at least let us see your face when we talk to you?” The girls peeked around Rebecca’s shoulder to see as Ryu slowly pulled his hood down, revealing his blazing red hair.
“I’m self conscious.” He said seriously, “I wear the hood because I look different.” Rebecca eyed him over.
“Just because you have weird colored hair, doesn’t mean you should hide it.” She said, “And what’s with the spots?” Rosette looked over to see that he still had small patches of red scales across his chest that was barely visible.
“Never mind.” He said, sitting back down, clearly annoyed. Rebecca got the hint and turned to leave.
“You’re coming tonight, right? We’re all going to be there.” She asked. Ryu shrugged.
“’I don’t know. Maybe.” He said, “When the hour is nigh, I shall consider my actions then.”
“What? Ok whatever.” She said, turning to leave, “You better come!” The group followed behind.
“What was that?” Rosette asked. Ryu looked confused.
            “What do you mean?”
“What’s with the weird vocabulary? ‘When the hour is nigh’? You sound like a bad Camelot movie.”
“I didn’t even notice.” He said, “I guess it slipped out. I used to talk like that all the time, but times have changed and I’m trying to learn.” He pointed to the headphones around his neck.
“I always wondered what you listened to.” She said, “What is it?”
“English instruction lessons.” He said, “It took me a while to learn it in the first place. Now I have to learn the new way to speak it.”
“What did you speak before?” Rosette asked.
“German, Swedish, and Russian.” He said, “Learned Japanese and Chinese when we went there for a couple of decades, then we came across the ocean to what is now Canada. It wasn’t long after that when I got frozen.”
“You know all of those languages?! That’s amazing!” she exclaimed.
“Not really. I had a lot of time to study them.” He said, “There are some humans who surely know more languages than me, and they were probably studying for less than fifty years. I’ve been studying for almost three hundred, not counting the frozen years.”
“Still it’s something to be proud of, Ryu.” She said with a smile.
“I learn what I need to get by. That’s all.” He said, “Like coffee, for example. I must remember that, and I must learn how to make it.”
“I can teach you.” She said.

The snow softly began to fall as Ryu sat by the window and stared out into the night sky. The snowflakes looked like soft feathers as they drifted through the black sky, but still he felt as if thousands of white doves were flying overhead, giving him a strange feeling if elation. He didn’t know if he was still feeling funny from being frozen, or if it was because he had finally begun to fit in. Rosette had told him repeatedly that she didn’t think it was a good idea to go out to a bar, where there were a lot of people who weren’t in the right mind. Although he had only mentioned it once, she had repeatedly told him no over the course of the evening, as if to convince herself that it was the right thing. It wasn’t until seven thirty that there was a knock on the door. Rosette got up to answer it and found both Crystal and Sparcy at the door, holding a bag.

            “What’s going on?” Rosette asked.
“We’re here to get him ready for tonight.” Sparcy said.
“Tonight? I don’t think it will be a good idea.” She said.
“Don’t be silly!” Crystal said, waving her off, “It’s the first chance in almost twelve hundred years that he has a chance to finally socialize with other people! He has to go!”
“He doesn’t even look nineteen!” she exclaimed, “He’ll never get in! He’ll be carded and he doesn’t have one.”
“Oh, we’ve got that covered.” Crystal said, pulling an ID card from her purse. Rosette noticed that it told his age to be twenty.
“This won’t work. He’s not twenty!” she said.
“Well what should I have put there, one thousand, three hundred, and ninety?” she said, “Besides, we can make it work.”
“How is that possible?” Rosette asked as they pushed past her and dragged Ryu into his bedroom.
“Just get ready to go out.” Sparcy said, “You’ll be surprised.”

After a shower and dressing in her favorite shirt and skirt, she began putting on makeup when she heard a commotion in the next room. She heard a lamp break as the floor shook for a moment, then heard muffled voices as things began to calm down. There was a knock on her bedroom door and Sparcy came in with a nervous smile on her face.
“Sorry about that. You need a new lamp for in there.” She said.
“What happened?” she asked. Sparcy sat down on her bed.
“He had to change back for a minute.” She said.
            “What for?”
“Well, we’ve been thinking, and we figured that the reason he was having so much trouble changing into his human form, was because it was too small.”
“What do you mean?” Rosette asked confused. She pictured Ryu as now being very overweight, and hoped she was wrong.
“He was taking the form of a sixteen year old.” She said, “His body was too small, so we suggested he take the form of a more mature human.”
“So he looks older?” she asked, “How much older?”
“He looks almost twenty now. He’s a bit taller and he turned out to be quite built.” She said, “Even I was surprised. He ended up with only one spot this time too and he can do it much faster.”
“Really? Where is his spot?” she asked, a strange smile came across Sparcy’s face.
“It’s on his back, but is that important?” she asked. Rosette turned red.
            “No, just curious.” She said.
“Well, Crystal is doing his hair and we bought him new clothes as well.” She said, “He’s going to have a blast!”
“But the girls saw his face today at school.” Rosette said, “They’re going to notice that he’s taller and older.”
“Details, details.” She said, “Worry about that when the time comes.” There was another knock on the door and Crystal poked her head inside with a smile on her face.
“I’m finished, you wanna see?” she asked, they could hear Ryu standing behind her.
“Come on, sis. It’s not a big deal.” He said. His voice was deeper than usual, but it was definitely him.
Rosette felt like she did when she walked down the stairs to meet her date for the high school prom. Not really knowing what he looked like and was hoping that she impressed him with her looks. Still she felt a mixture of fear and anxiety when the door swung open, Crystal moved out of the way, and the light from her bedroom hit his face, revealing the most attractive guy she had ever seen. She did feel attracted to him before, but felt it to be inappropriate, due to his apparent age. Now there was no reason for her not to be allowed to feel these emotions, and she found it more than she could handle. He took a step into the room and shyly smiled as he pulled the end of is open shirt back and shoved his hands into the pockets of his black pants.
“Um, what do you think?” he asked, shyly, “Be honest, you can laugh if you want.” Still she was speechless. She finally realized that she was staring at him in surprise and tried to direct her eyes elsewhere, but for some reason couldn’t.
“W-wow.” She stammered, “That’s a big improvement! Not that there was anything wrong with before, it’s just……wow.” Sparcy leaned over to her sister.
“I think she likes it.” She whispered loudly. Crystal just giggled.
“This is just for tonight, right?” He asked, “These clothes are nice and all, but I’m not used to revealing so much of myself.” He pulled his outer shirt closer around himself.
“Well, I’ll have to make that cloak of yours longer, or I could just buy a new jacket or something.” Sparcy said.
“Anyway, it’s almost nine! You two get going!” Crystal said, pushing them both out the door. Before she new it, Ryu was sitting in the passenger seat next to her and they were waving to his sisters before speeding into the snow filled sky.

It was surprising to find the bar so empty. Rosette was blushing the whole way there and once they had arrived, she hoped the dim lights would hide her red face, or that others would think it was her makeup.
Everyone who was there turned to look at them when they arrived, and they saw a group of girls wave to them as they looked over the dark room. The girls had spotted his blazing red hair from the door, but they heard them whispering to each other as they came nearer.
“Are you sure that’s him? He looks different.” Someone said.
“It’s him. He brought Rosette.” Rebecca said. She smiled as they took a seat.
“Wow, what happened to you?” Someone said, smiling at Ryu, “You’ve changed!”
“What happened to the mysterious cloak?” Rebecca said. Ryu told the truth.
“My sisters found out I was going out and gave me a makeover.” He said with a smile, “I’m keeping the cloak, though.”
“You looked younger before, what happened?” she asked, leaning her chin on her hands.
“I was younger. Everyone is younger in the past.” He said. The girls laughed.
“So, what are you drinking?” she asked, Ryu looked around.
“He hasn’t  been drinking before.” Rosette said.
“This should be interesting.” She said, waving over a waitress, “Get him the hardest liquor you have.”
“Wait a minute! Shouldn’t he start out slow?” Rosette exclaimed. Rebecca waved her finger.
“No, no. It’s like learning to swim. You’ll learn yourself if you’re just thrown in the deep end.” She said. The waitress laid a glass of whiskey in front of him, and a spirit in front of Rosette.
Ryu stared at the glass for a moment, and then downed the half filled glass of straight whiskey in one gulp. He placed the glass back to the table without making a face.
“Wow, you sure you haven’t been drinking before?” Rebecca asked surprised. Ryu shook his head.
“It’s pretty good, but it doesn’t quench your thirst.” He said, “If anything, it makes you even thirstier.”
“That’s what alcohol does to you.” She said, “Anyway, let’s talk.”
            “About what?” he asked.
“About you? Where are you from?” she asked, the rest of the girls leaned in to listen.
“I was born in Germany.” He said, “But I don’t have anywhere in particular. My family was moving around a lot.”
“Are you living with your family now?” A girl asked.
“No, I’m staying with Rosette.” He said. Rosette almost choked on her drink and began coughing.
“You two live together?! Are you dating?” Rebecca asked. Ryu leaned over to Rosette.
“Again with this ‘dating’ thing.” He whispered, “What’s going on?”
            “Never mind.” She whispered.
            “Rosette?” Rebecca asked.
“We’re not dating, we’re just friends.” She nervously said, “Roommates, really.”
“Well, what do you feel about someone else asking him out?” she asked. Many of the girls giggled.
“It’s his own prerogative. He can do what he wants.” She said.
“Really? Then he’s fair game, right?” she asked. Something clicked inside Ryu with her words, as if he had heard those words before, and they meant something very bad for him. He felt very anxious from those simple words, but still couldn’t place where he had heard them before, or why he felt so scared.
“I’m not letting you sink your fangs into him.” Rosette said, “He has his standards too, and he deserves better.”
“What’s wrong with me? I’m not so bad.” She said, “My fangs aren’t poison, and I’m free to hunt any prey I want.” Again, Ryu’s mind raced at her words as he desperately tried to remember why he felt so scared.
“You’re a few arrows short of a full quiver for hunting him.” Rosette said, “Don’t go after him, he bites.”
“I can take a bite or two.” She said, “It’s not like he’s going to eat me!”
“You never know…….” She muttered. Another drink was placed in front of Ryu and again he downed it as fast as the first.
“What’s wrong with you?” Rebecca asked, “You look out of it. Is the booze getting to you already?”
“No. I’m fine.” He said, “I was just distracted by something.”
“Are you really alright?” Rosette asked.
            “I’m fine.”
“Anyway, you’re saying he’s on the market, but I can’t afford him?” Rebecca asked, “That’s not fair.”
“I didn’t say that.” She said, “You could buy him and not like what you find under the packaging.”
“Oh, I see. He has a secret that you know, right?” she asked accusingly, “You two are closer than I thought.”
“It’s not like that.” She said,
“Fine then.” She said, “Ryu, let’s dance!”
            “What?”
“Dance. You can dance right?” she said standing up.
            “No.”
“Well then, let me show you.” She said pulling him towards the dance floor. Half way there, he felt very uncomfortable and he felt like he was doing something wrong. The pain in his stomach was a clear sign as well.
“This is going to be fun.” She giggled, and then saw his face turn white, “What’s wrong?”
            “I’m injured, I can’t dance.” He said.
“What happened?” she asked as he raised his shirt to examine the bloodstained bandages. Rebecca backed away in shock, “Oh my god!”
“I’m alright, I just shouldn’t dance.” He said, lowering his shirt. They returned to the table where a lot of confused faces met them when they returned. Ryu felt oddly relaxed and the pain in his stomach strangely went away as he sat next to Rosette, but still he felt uneasy. Perhaps coming here wasn’t such a good idea after all.
“What happened, Rebecca?” one girl asked, “Did you get cold feet?”
“What? N-no. I’m fine.” She stammered, still staring at Ryu. He could tell that the sight of his blood upset her and he felt worse.
“Maybe you shouldn’t drink anymore.” Rosette whispered, “I saw that. You shouldn’t thin your blood anymore.”
“Alright.” He said, staring into his empty glass.
“So, Ryu, what are you into?” one girl asked.
            “Into?”
“Hobbies, interests, things you like.” She said.
“Mostly swimming. I used to do that for fun when I was younger, when I wasn’t fighting or traveling.” He said, careful not to say flying.
“You fought a lot?” she asked, “That must have been bad. How many fights have you been in?”
            “Too many to count.”
“Why did you have to fight anyway? Did you go to a rough school or something?”
“No, it was mostly over who I was.” He said, “I didn’t have to do anything and people would hate me.”
“Racism is cruel no matter how you look at it.” Rebecca said, “Just because you’re German.”
“I don’t consider myself to be German. I was just born there.” Ryu said, “My parents weren’t born there, they just happened to be there when I was born.”
“Where are they now?” Rebecca asked. Rebecca shot him a worried look and he simply called the waitress over for another drink. Again he downed the drink, and headed for the bathroom.
“Did I say something wrong?” Rebecca asked. Rosette nodded.
“It’s alright, you didn’t know.” She said.
            “So what did I do?”
“Ryu’s parents are dead. They were killed a long time ago.” Rosette said, there were gasps all around the table.
“I had no idea! I’m so sorry!” Rebecca gasped, “What happened?”
“I’m not sure, he hasn’t said much more than that.” She lied. He returned soon after from the bathroom. He took his seat and everyone went silent.
“You told them, didn’t you?” he sighed.
            “Sorry. Shouldn’t I have?”
            “It’s fine.” He said.
“Ryu, I’m sorry…”Rebecca said. Ryu shot her a glare.
“What else do you want to know?” he snapped, making her jump.
            “Um, I…”
“Listen, everyone has things about themselves that they want to keep private.” He said, “You have your secrets and I respect that. That’s why I don’t ask. And I’m sure you share your secrets with people you trust, so don’t go pestering Rosette about me because that’s why I told her. I know she wouldn’t say.”
The room went silent. Even the music stopped that was booming in the background. With a rap on the speaker by the bartender made the music come back to life, but still no one said a word.
“What was it that I was drinking, anyway?” he asked, breaking the silence.
            “Whiskey.” Rosette quietly said.
“Ah, must remember that. It’s pretty good.” He said.
“It’s also flammable.” She added, making him raise his eyebrows.
            “Really? Interesting….” He said.

The night went on, with Ryu being the center of attention for most of the night. He had ignored Rosette’s warnings about drinking and drank anything that was put in front of him. The only time the girls stopped paying attention to him was when Rebecca fell off her chair and her friends helped her up. After that, they were all too busy laughing to notice that he was the only one silent, and he could still hear their giggles even as the cab pulled away, leaving both he and Rosette standing in front of a darkened bar. The clock tower shone brightly overhead like a full moon on a clear night, but this was anything but.
“I’ve called us a cab.” Rosette said, “I don’t think I should drive.” He could tell that she had too much to drink, but oddly he had twice as much as her, but felt fine. She, on the other hand, stumbled and leaned against him as they waited for the taxi.
“Is this what alcohol does to humans?” he asked. Rosette smiled.
“You can’t tell me you don’t feel anything!” she said with a red face, “You drank more than me!”
“I guess it doesn’t affect me.” He shrugged. Rosette held on to him for balance, but she was standing closer than necessary as she held onto his arm. He thought that he should feel uncomfortable in this situation, but oddly he felt comfortable and found himself wondering what exactly it meant.
“It’s getting cold.” She said, “Aren’t you cold in just that t-shirt?”
“Rosette, I told you before. I’m cold blooded.” He said.
“Oh, right. I forgot.” She mumbled, “Too bad.”
“What’s wrong with that?” he asked.
“I had just hoped you could keep me warm like before.” She muttered.
“I can do that.” He said. A few moments later, the snow had melted on the ground below their feet and she stepped closer to him.
The payphone behind them suddenly rang and Ryu reached to answer it without thinking.
            “Hello?”
“Hello, did you call a cab a while ago?” a man asked, “Sorry but I’m going to be late. The roads are really bad. I can be there in a half hour.” Ryu stared at the phone, deep in thought. “Hello? Are you there?”
“Yes, thanks anyway, but we won’t be needing your services.” He said.
            “Are you sure?”
            “Positive.”
“Alright, take care.” He said, hanging up. Ryu replaced the phone and looked around.
            “Who wassat?” Rosette slurred.
“The cab can’t make it.” He said.
“How are we going to get home?! Neither of us can drive!” she exclaimed.
            “I have an idea.”
            “What?”
“Let’s fly.” He said. Rosette blankly stared at him.
“Are you serious? You could get caught!” she exclaimed.
“It’s dark, there’s a snowstorm, and it’s the only way I can see.” He said, “Plus, you’re still sick and staying out here could make it worse.”
“I think I accomplished that with the booze.” She said.
“You didn’t have to come.” He said, “But I’m glad you did.”
            “What are you saying?”
“I’m saying that I’m glad we’re together, Rosette.” He said, “It feels right.”
“Ryu…..” she trailed off. She jumped when he suddenly burst into flames and transformed before her eyes, right in the middle of the parking lot. Through her drunken eyes she saw a magnificent animal, but in her heart, she knew he was her friend, one that she could trust.
            “Let’s go.” He said.

She wasn’t sure if it was the alcohol making her feel this way, or if it was because they were flying two hundred feet of the ground, but as they soared high over the buildings in the dark of the night, she held on tight both for warmth and so that she didn’t fall off. Any other person would be terrified being on the back of a real dragon, flying high over Toronto, and by all means, she should be, but she did feel safe.
It didn’t take long to get home. Once he had touched down on the roof of their apartment building, she carefully jumped down and turned to look at the rare sight.
“What’s wrong, Rosette?” he asked, staring her in the eyes. She looked distant, staring back at him with glazed eyes, “Are you feeling well?”
“I’m wonderful!” she swooned, “That was amazing!”
            “You weren’t scared at all?”
“No. I was with you.” She said. Without warning, she rushed forward and wrapped her arms around his huge neck. He didn’t know what to say. He slowly shrank and changed back to his human form while still in her arms until they were both staring into each other’s eyes, as a man and woman would.
He didn’t say anything, and neither did she. It seemed odd for them to be standing on the roof of an apartment building, in the middle of an icy snowstorm, in the middle of the night, but neither of them was thinking about that now.
He wasn’t sure if this was right. She was acting strange after all. She had said before that she didn’t have a romantic attraction to him before, but now she was saying otherwise, not with her words, but with her actions. To be honest, Ryu was totally confused. Not only was he struggling with his own feelings, but since she couldn’t do it herself, he was struggling with hers as well. She leaned in closer and closed her eyes, waiting for him to come the rest of the way as the wind blew her hair across her face. He had no idea what to do or even how to do it if even his wildest ideas were somehow true, so he followed suit and closed his eyes as well.
Her kiss was soft and warm, nothing like he had expected. Her grip on him tightened and he held her the same. Now he knew why these humans made such a big deal over the first kiss. He had heard it before, a long time ago, how it was special and made you feel like never before, but he wasn’t expecting this. He wasn’t sure if it was because he was a dragon, or if this is what it should be, but he wanted to feel this way forever, if he could. He indulged in the feeling, letting it become his alcohol, and became intoxicated by it. It took a hailstone to the face to snap him out of his trance, and he finally noticed that she had passed out on his shoulder, the taste of her lips still on his.
He had to pull her keys from her purse to get into the apartment. He fumbled with the strange contraption for a while until he figured out how to use it. Once inside, he carried her into her room and put her to bed. Once she was soundly sleeping, he fell over, unconscious on the floor.
